On October 3rd, McDonald’s took us on a nostalgia trip as they released a limited-edition ‘Happy Meal for Adults’ in collaboration with the streetwear brand Cactus Plant Flea Market.  The “Cactus Plant Flea Market Box Big Mac Combo Meal,” as it’s listed on the menu, included one of four toys. Purchasers had a chance to unwrap a throwback McDonald’s character – Grimace, Birdie, or the Hamburgler – or the Cactus Plant Flea Market’s signature Cactus Buddy adorned in McDonald’s swag.

Instantly, the collab sold out. Now, those lucky enough to snag one, or all four, are selling the collectible toys on eBay for ridiculous prices.

For some context, Cactus Plant Flea Market is the brainchild of designer Cynthia Lu. She previously worked for Pharell Williams on his streetwear brand Billionaire Boys Club. Lu went on to develop CPFM, which was officially unveiled in 2015. Since then, a number of influential artists including Pharell himself, Kanye West, Lil Uzi Vert, and Frank Ocean have been spotted wearing CPFM, shooting the brand’s popularity into the stratosphere. Naturally, any project with the Cactus Plant Flea Market name attached is now bound to get hype, thus the unreasonably-priced eBay listings.

People are legitimately dropping hundreds on McDonald’s toys. Maybe it’s for the ‘clout,’ maybe it’s cause they’re ‘rare,’ but let’s be real. At the end of the day, it’s just a piece of plastic and an expensive one at that.
